Project Description

The kitchen wall tiling/ backsplash is more than just a decorative feature, it protects walls from moisture, grease, and daily wear while adding style to the space. Arranging expert tilers ensures precise measurements, flawless alignment, durable adhesion, and a polished finish and Paint and Handy was given that task in a residential property in New Cross, South East London.

The brief called for a clean, contemporary finish using classic Metro tiles paired with modern detailing, delivering a kitchen backsplash that balances functionality with the crisp look.

On receiving the project, Paint & Handy started the work with careful protection of kitchen units, worktops, and appliances, followed by thorough surface assessment and priming where necessary to ensure optimal tile adhesion. Existing wall finishes were prepared to create a smooth, level substrate, and precise measurements were taken to plan tile layout and minimise cuts around plug sockets and fixtures.

The core design element of the project was the installation of Metro tiles in 200 x 100 x 5mm white gloss, a versatile format that brings light, depth, and a sense of space to the kitchen. The tiles were laid in a traditional brick-bond pattern, creating visual rhythm across the walls while maintaining a clean, ordered aesthetic. Mapei grout in shade No. 101 (light grey) was carefully selected to provide subtle contrast without dominating the white tile surface, adding an identity to each tile edge while keeping the overall look bright and airy.

To frame the tiled area and provide a polished transition at edges and corners, 5mm square metal trim in a chrome finish was installed with precision. The chrome detailing introduces a contemporary accent that complements modern kitchen fixtures and fittings, while ensuring long-term durability and a professional finish at vulnerable tile edges.

All joints around the worktop, sink, and any moisture-prone areas were sealed using Manhattan grey silicone, chosen to coordinate with the light grey grout for visual continuity. The silicone was applied with attention to consistency and neatness, ensuring both watertight performance and a clean, uniform appearance.

Throughout the installation, meticulous care was taken to achieve level tile lines, consistent grout spacing, and sharp corners. Socket outlets were carefully cut around, and all trim edges aligned flush with surrounding surfaces. The result is a kitchen tiling installation that combines the enduring style of Metro tiles with the refined detailing expected in a well-executed renovation.

This New Cross kitchen project reflects Paint and Handy’s commitment to delivering high-quality tiling work that enhances both the functionality and visual appeal of everyday living spaces.
