Project Description
Paint and Handy recently completed a specialist fireplace restoration and decorative finishing project for a customer in Peckham, London. Completed over a two-day period, the project focused on transforming a newly acquired Georgian-style fireplace surround from its original worn condition into an elegant centrepiece ready to complement the room’s interior design.
When the fireplace arrived, it showed signs of age, old paint build-up, surface imperfections, and gaps that required extensive preparation before installation and decoration could begin. Our team carefully fixed the fireplace securely to the wall, ensuring it was properly aligned and structurally stable before undertaking the restoration works.
A significant part of this project was for the surface preparation. Existing paint layers were stripped back and all gaps, joints, and imperfections were professionally filled and sealed to create a seamless appearance. The timber surfaces were then progressively sanded using a multi-stage process with 120, 150, 180, and finally 400-grit sandpaper. This methodical approach allowed us to achieve an exceptionally smooth finish while preserving the intricate Georgian detailing and decorative mouldings.
Following preparation, two coats of Zinsser BIN primer were applied. This premium shellac-based primer provides excellent adhesion, seals the surface, and ensures a durable foundation for the finishing coats. Once fully cured, two coats of Dulux Oil-Based Eggshell in Timeless were carefully applied to create a rich, durable, and elegant finish.
The completed fireplace now provides a striking focal point within the room, showcasing crisp detailing, smooth surfaces, and a refined eggshell finish that perfectly balances traditional craftsmanship with modern decorative standards.
What sets Paint and Handy apart is our commitment to preparation and finishing. While many decorators focus only on applying paint, we understand that exceptional results are achieved long before the final coat is applied. Our meticulous sanding process, attention to detail, and restoration expertise ensure a finish that not only looks beautiful on completion but remains durable for years to come.
